When I graduated from Christ’s in 1991 I was armed with my Engineering degree and all the life skills that three years in college had given me. First stop was Lesotho, Southern Africa where I taught maths and science to high school students for a year, and then I joined Esso, part of Exxon Mobil - the world’s biggest company. 13 years on an oil Refinery meant a wardrobe varying from hard hats and overalls out on the plant, to smart business suits at the Department of Trade and Industry. I line managed entirely male teams and was the most senior woman on the refinery for much of my time there! Having produced two children, and acquired a husband and 3 step sons along the way, I left Esso, and Engineering to join the NHS. I’m currently managing a chunk of Basingstoke Hospital with 750 staff and a £35 million budget. I’m loving it, and I do believe the logical clear thinking that I leant in my time at Christ’s is a huge asset in making sense of the complexities of healthcare management. Life is something of a juggling act, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
